Quicksilver mini-review

So I finally slogged all the way through Quicksilver, Neal Stephenson's new book. Ok, I admit it, I skimmed through some parts, but still. I bought this book because all the reviews said it was the Best... Book... Evar !, and because my friends seemed to like it. As the result, I have once again learned that people are not to be trusted.

I actually had a hard time deciding which book I hates more: Quicksilver or Cryptonomicon. Both books have their minor redeeming features: Cryptonomicon has some excellent primers on various encryption schemes, whereas Quicksilver has some humorous historical anectodes about Hooke, Newton, Leibnitz et al (which are probably all made up, but still). Both books are humongous in size, which normally would be a good thing if they weren't so bad. Unfortunately, both books are almost completely incoherent, resembling a bored history student's lecture notes as opposed to any kind of coherent narrative.

After some deliberation, I have finally settled on Quicksilver. In Cryptonomicon, Neal Stephenson at least looked like he tried to stitch together two separate stories in some sort of a coherent fashion. True, he failed miserably, but at least he tried. In Quicksilver, Stephenson just gives up, and throws out page after page after page of random pseudo-historical tidbits, without any attempt at linking them together. Characters come and go, political upheavals occur and are immediately forgotten, discoveries are made and shelved, the timeline jumps back and forth... And, all throughout this mess, the reader is not given a single reason to care. Even Stephenson's trademark dry wit begins to wear thin; one can almost see the writer sitting at his desk, brow furrowed in concentration, muttering: "hm, this is all pretty boring... I should say something funny... but what ?".

Quicksilver, just like Cryptonomicon, is punctuated by exposition. At least once per page, the narrative (for lack of a better term) stops, the current character (again, for lack of a better term) gets on a virtual podium, and begins spouting facts. After a couple paragraphs, he shuts up, and the next random event begins to unfold. In Cryptonomicon, the factoids are interesting, or at least educational; in Quicksilver, however, they are simply tedious. A scholar of Newton's biography might find them curious, but, seeing as I had a firm C+ in History all throughout my education, I simply don't care. Stephenson also tries to hint at some sort of political intrigue happening behind the scenes; however -- and you probably already knew I would say that -- none of it is actually intriguing enough or complex enough to merit a second thought.

In the interests of fairness, I should mention that the book does improve (briefly, though) in its second half. The point of view jumps randomly to the perspective of Jack Shaftoe (or whatever his name is), a common street urchin who builds his way up to greatness (well, sort of). This part of the book is strangely coherent and even entertaining, sort of like Stephenson's previous works. However, it's simply too little, too late to redeem this brick of a book. I'm sure that people will point out that all the randomness does eventually come to some sort of a conclusion -- but, by that time, I wasn't really paying attention, since I was concentrating very hard on not throwing the book out the window. At the end, I am left with the feeling that Stephenson was so hell-bent on shoving every little literary device -- sex, intrigue, science, magic, love, etc. -- into his book, that he simply ticked them off on some list one by one, without making an effort of actually putting them together in some sensible way.

Note that I have no a priori prejudice against complex, interlocking plots. I loved Cyteen (which I will review in more detail shortly), and I can't wait for more Song of Ice and Fire. However, "multithreaded" books such as these require careful care; just as in case of real multithreading, minute mistakes can lead to race conditions, intermittent memory corruption, and, eventually, total failure. C.J.Cherryh and George R.R. Martin manage to escape this fate; Stephenson does not.

Also note that Stephenson's other books -- except for Cryptonomicon -- are excellent; once again, I plan on reviewing some of them later on. I can only hope that these two colossal (in all senses of the word) failures on Stephenson's part are not a sign of things to come.

Yeah, but at least the book has a beginning, middle and end. And they end unlike some books (*cough* Dune: Butlerian Jihad and Machine Crusades *cough*).

Seems to me that it's just like a Final Fantasy, but in a book. Walk around, random plot event, walk around, mission, side-quest, walk around, repeat. But this time, the graphics are in your mind. And you don't have to deal with levelling or finding super-ultimate-powerup weapons of monster destruction.

I think it would be a nice trade-off, except there really isn't an excuse for poor literature.

Actually, no, these books really don't have any semblance of a linear plot. You can read the chapters in any order, and they will still make no sense. Compare this with a game such as FFX or FFVI or even Chrono Trigger, where there is a definite plot, and it's an actually interesting plot that you want to follow further as it develops.

My attitude towards this book has careened all over the place....

I was really excited to get it before it was published.

Then I paid extra and got a copy fedexed to Singapore.

I started reading it and was reasonably (cautiously?) enthusiastic.

About 1/3rd into it, my trip to Japan was scuttled, which put me in a terrible, awful humor for the better part of the week.

At this point I started to really not enjoy the book, and I often felt like my eyes were running over the text, but the little voice in my head wasn't even saying the words.

A month later my mood improved and I revisited the last third of the book. I seemed to enjoy it more again.

I finish the book, say I basically liked it, and then forgot about it until I read Stas' review which brought to the surface all sorts of legitimate complaints.

Now again I don't know whether I liked the book or not. Is a book with all this color and detail and uniqueness, but a weak plot, worse than a run-of-the-mill bad book?
