Roger sent me a link to MIT's excellent article on the commonly used Japanese cultural expressions, honorifics, and idioms. Surprisingly enough, I actually knew almost all of the common expressions listed there; that's what watching Chobits will do for you. I didn't know this part though:
moshi-moshi: Fox-spirits can't say this, so announcing moshi moshi when you pick up the phone identifies you as human. Ha! You laugh! Alexander Graham Bell invented the word "Hello'', for much the same purpose (his original thought was to use the word, "ahoy!'').
Using the telephone as a kitsune filter... Why didn't I think of that ?
