Note that installing Windows XP is a long and arduous task; it will probably take you a whole day. However, it might be worth it, depending on what Windows version you have now. Of course, you could be running some other OS, but then you're probably not reading this guide, right ? In any case, upgrading from Win 95, 98 or ME is a must, since these versions are no more than broken toys. Windows 2000 is not too bad, but it doesn't have as much hardware support as XP, it takes longer to boot up, and it's not going to be supported for much longer. So, WinXP is the natural choice if your current system is hosed.
Pre-install: backup and downloads
Before you install anything, you should back up all your data files, including your photos, technical drawings, Word documents, the contents of the "My Documents" (what a stupid name) folder, email mailboxes, MP3s, and whatever else you may have. The best way to do this is to archive all the files with WinZip, or, better yet, WinRar, and burn them to CDs. WinRar has an option where it will automatically spread large amounts of data across multiple CDs for you; WinZip probably has that too somewhere, but I have never been able to find it.
Next, you will want to download the drivers for your video and sound cards. You probably have original CDs with the drivers on them; these CDs are useless because the drivers on them are almost certainly out of date. If you don't know the name of your video card, you can look for it in the Device Manager (right-click "My Computer", then choose "Hardware" and "Device Manager"); the name of the driver will be under "Display adapter" or something similar. If that doesn't work, open up your computer and look at the card; it will usually say something like "Nvidia GeForce 3 ! New !!!" on it in large bold letters. You can then google for the manufacturer's site, and download the drivers. The same tactic works for the sound card, obviously.
Once you have those drivers, burn them to a separate CD; also, don't forget to put WinRar or WinZip on it, as well. We will call this CD the "Utilities CD", and we will be adding more stuff to it in the future, so don't lose it.
Install part 1: formatting
Once you have backed up all your data and downloaded the essentials, put the WinXP CD into the drive and reboot. Your computer will probably prompt you with something like, "Do you wish to boot from CD ?" Yes, you do.
After an interminable wait period, WinXP installer will load up. Tell it that you want to set up a new WinXP system from scratch (you do not want to upgrade ! That's bad !). The installer will then pronpt you to format your drive. It will warn you that you have some partitions in use currently on your drive. This is where you will tell the installer to permanently obliterate all these partitions. This is the point of no return: all the data on your hard drive will now be permanently and irrevocably annihilated. Did you forget to back something up ? Too bad, because it's gone now. So, make sure you didn't forget anything.
Delete all your existing partitions from the drive, and create two new partitions: we will call them "System" and "Data". The System partition will contain Windows itself, and any installed programs. The Data partition will contain your photos, documents, music, etc. This setup makes it easier to reinstall Windows in the future: you will now only have to wipe the System partition, leaving the Data intact. The System partition should be at least 10Gb in size; more than that if you have a huge hard drive. The Data partition can occupy the remaining space on your drive. If you are feeling adventurous, you can choose to make the Data partition smaller than the remaining free space; this will allow you to install some other OS in the un-partitioned area later. The Windows installer will probably prompt you to select a filesystem type for each partition; choose NTFS, unless you are planning to dual-boot into Linux or DOS. Then again, if you are reading this guide you are probably not planning on dual booting, so choose NTFS anyway.
Also, Jason has pointed out to me that some companies don't like you to perform your own Windows XP installations. What they'd like you to do instead is to pay them tons of money so they can install Windows for you. Here's what you may need to do if you want to foil their little scams (as listed in Jason's comment):
Install part 2: setup
After another interminable wait period, your partitions will be formatted. Tell the installer to install Windows into the System partition, and settle in for another long wait. Eventually, the installer will prompt you to configure some options, such as your local timezone, preferred language, etc. Set them to whatever you like.
Eventually, the installer will detect your network card, and prompt you for the settings. For 99% of the people out here, the defaults are fine. For the remaining 1%, this would be the time when you dig out the settings given to you by your network administrator, and fill them in. Note that having a functional network connection is crucial for getting your computer to work, so be careful here.
Also eventually, the installer will ask you to enter the administrative password. This password will be the ultimate master key that unlocks your computer, so make sure you do not lose it, and do not give it out to strangers, or anyone else for that matter. If you wish, you can also create an extra user to represent yourself; give this user administrative privileges, and a password of his own. In case this is not obvious, I can explain why security is important in a bit.
Finally, the installation will be complete, and Windows will boot up. Congratulations: you're about a quarter of the way there.
Post-install part 1: UI fixes
The first thing you will notice when you log in is that your desktop looks like crap. There are two reasons for that, and, hence there are two general things to be done.
First of all, right-click the taskbar, choose "Properties | Start Menu" and select "Classic Start Menu". This will turn off all the nasty little "enhancements" that Windows adds to your Start menu -- now, this menu should actually be usable. In order to disable the rest of the themes, right-click the desktop, and choose "Properties | Themes". Select the Windows Classic theme. All the cartoonish button outlines and nasty bevels will finally disappear, and you will be left with a functional desktop. To prevent the taskbar from jumping about, right-click it again, choose "Properties", and uncheck "Auto-hide the taskbar". This will save you a lot of aggravation later on.
The next thing you need to do is install the video drivers from the Utilities CD. This will probably be as simple as double-clicking the setup program that you downloaded during pre-installation. Install the drivers, reboot, then right-click the desktop again and choose "Properties | Settings". Make sure the color depth is set to 32 bits, and then select a decent resolution -- something like 1280x1024 or 1600x1200. Sometimes, a higher resolution would result in a lower color depth (16 bit or less); never accept that. Trust me, colors are more important than resolution. When you have settled on a good color/resolution combo, click "Ok", and your monitor should switch to the new settings. Now, right-click the desktop again, and choose "Properties | Settings | Advanced | Monitor". Set the refresh rate to at least 75 Hz; 85 Hz is better. Once again, if there are no high refresh rates available, lower your resolution. A high refresh rate will make the monitor stop blinking in tune with the incandescent lights in your house, which will in turn stop you from having migraines (literally). Note that none of these graphics options actually make sense for LCD monitors (such as the ones used in laptops). These monitors are hardwired to use a specific resolution, at a specific color depth, and they don't really have any refresh rate at all. If you have an LCD monitor, make sure to set the resolution to the correct value; otherwise, everything will look really blurry.
Now, it's time to fix some desktop odds and ends. Right-click "My Computer", then choose "Properties | Advanced", and click "Settings" under "Performance". On the "Visual Effects" tab, you'll see a list of checkboxes for your various visual settings. Click the "Custom" radio button, then check "Smooth edges of screen fonts" (makes Web browsing much easier on the eyes) and "Show window contents while dragging". Then un-check "Animate windows when minimizing or maximizing" (the animations are fun for about 5 minutes, and then they get annoying).
As long as we are fixing crappy UI issues, we might as well fix the Windows Explorer. Open up any folder in Windows Explorer (you can double-click "My Documents", for example). Select "View | Details" from the menu. Then, select "Tools | Folder Options". On the General tab, check "Windows Classic Folders", then click over to the View tab. You will see a long list of checkboxes, some of which are unchecked. Make sure the following boxes are checked: "Display the contents of System folders", "Show hidden files and folders", "Display full path in the title bar", "Display full path in the address bar". The general idea here is to make sure that Windows is not helpfully hiding crucial information from you. After that, make sure that the "Hide file extensions for known file types" box is not checked. Viruses often take advantage of this helpful feature by sending you files named something like "beach_fun.gif.exe". If you did not uncheck the trecherous box, Windows will only show you "beach_fun.gif" in the Windows Explorer; you will then click what appears to be a harmless picture, only to launch the real file, "beach_fun.gif.exe", which will infect your computer with more viruses than an 18th century French... er... entertainer. In case you are wondering, yes, this is one of the reasons why security is important.
You may also want to check the "Launch folder windows in a separate process" box. This means that when (not if, when) Windows Explorer locks up or crashes, it won't take the rest of your desktop along with it -- you should be able to simply "End Task" the offending window and move on. However, this option may come at a cost of slightly increased memory usage, so you may want to leave it unchecked if you don't have enough RAM installed.
Anyways, once you're done checking all the boxes, click the "Apply", then "Apply to all folders". This will make sure that all the folders on your system will now have a sane layout that does not try to trick you into launching viruses. As a finishing touch, click the "View" menu again, and make sure "Status Bar" is checked. The status bar tells you how many files there are in the current folder, how much space they take up, etc. -- sometimes, these stats come in handy.
At this point, your desktop should look semi-normal. Change the wallpaper if you like, and install your sound card drivers so that you can hear sounds. Right away, you will discover that some of the sounds are annoying. Go to "Start | Settings | Control Panel | Sounds and audio devices". On the Volume tab, check "Place volume icon in the taskbar" (they really mean "in the system tray"). On the "Sounds" tab, play with your sounds and select which ones to change or discard. Once you apply your changes, you will see that the default Windows volume control icon now appears in your system tray -- most likely, next to the now totally useless "Super-cool Audio Mixer 32 (tm)" that came with your sound card drivers. We will remove it shortly, but it's ok to leave it there for now.
Post-install part 2: Patches, optimization
Your computer is now semi-functional. However, to pretty much anyone on the Internet (to which you should now be connected), it looks something like a gigantic pile of rotten meat must look to flies: i.e., very inviting. Within a day or two of installation, helpful flies, I mean hackers, will take total control of your computer, and force it to send penis enlargement ads to thousands of people daily. Note that this is not a conditional statement: this unfortunate situation will occur, unless you take steps to prevent it. Let's do that now.
Go to "Start | Windows Update", and follow through the steps there, until you can finally click "Scan for Updates". You will see literally hundreds of security updates; ignore them for now. Download the following updates, in order:
Note that all these downloads can take up to half a day on a fast connection; on a dialup, they will take ages. They will also force you to reboot your computer about 100 times in a row. It's unfortunate, but it has to be done.
After all the patches, your computer will be a bit stronger against hackers than tissue paper. It's still not secure (no computer is, and no Windows computer especially), but it's not an immediate candidate for becoming a Viagra spam distribution center.
In addition to patching the security holes, you might as well optimize your system a bit. Go back to the performance settings ("My Computer | Properties | Advanced | Performance | Settings") and click the "Advanced" tab. Then, under "Virtual Memory", click "Change". Tell Windows to place your swap file on your "System" partition (i.e., the C: drive), and set the minimum and maximum boxes to the same value. A size of 2048 (that is, 2 Gigs) should be enough for most people at the time of this writing. The reason for this is to stop Windows from shrinking and growing your swap file when it feels like it, wasting valuable time. Note: if you have two hard drives, put your swap file on the extra drive. This will make your system marginally faster, as well.
Third-party software
Ok, now you have a functional Windows XP installation. You can run Notepad, play Minesweeper, and maybe browse the Web, but that's about it. Fortunately, there are several thrid-party applications which are available for free (or, at least, for cheap) that actually allow you to do useful things. Before installing all these applications, however, you should prepare a place for them, to avoid confusion. Click the Start menu, then right-click "Programs". Choose "Explore All Users". Create some folders with descriptive category names for the programs you will install. I usually create "DvD", "Games", "Graphics", "Internet", "Music", "Utilities" and "Work", but your mileage may vary. When you're done, go back to the Start menu, right-click "Programs" again, choose "Explore", and create the same folders all over again. Also, create a folder somewhere on your Data partition where the downloaded install files will go; I usually create something like "D:\Downloads".
Before installing all the software, however, it might be a good idea to create a System Restore point. Click "Start | Help and Support", and choose "Undo changes to your computer with System Restore" in the "Pick a Task" area. Then, click the "Create a Restore Point" radio button, and follow directions. Windows will create a "snapshot" of all the system files on your drive. If you manage to destroy your system somehow, you will be able to use System Restore to undo all critical changes to your system, rolling it back to the snapshot you have just created. By default, System Restore will make additional snapshots of your system once a day; you can change this if you like, by clicking the "Change System Restore Settings" link on the left side of the main System Restore window.
Now you're ready to download and install a bunch of stuff. When you're installing any kind of software, keep in mind the following rules:
Internet Explorer is trying to get access to the internet. Should I let it ? [Yes][Yes, always][No][No, never]The last message indicates that Microsoft Word, a program designed to produce pretty essays, is trying to access the Intenet for some reason. Hmmm... now why would it do that ? The common answer is "because this word document I just opened is infected with a virus" (note: I just made up that example... I actually don't use Word). The rule of thumb is, deny internet access to any program whose name you do not recognize (except "Services and Controller App", sadly... you need to allow it access in order for DNS to work). The program in question is probably some sort of virus. Be especially wary of programs that actually try to send out data from your computer; 9 times out of 10 these programs are sending someone your credit card information and password files -- or using your computer to mass-mail breast enhancement scams to people. If you think I'm being overdramatic about this, think again. A large portion (and, likely, the majority) of all spam worldwide comes from unsuspecting users who left their home computers wide open. In fact, the RoadRunner cable modem service was so virus-and-spam-infested at one time that people seriously considered walling it off from the Internet permanently, like some kind of cancerous growth. This is why firewalls are important. In addition, ZoneAlarm will alert you whenever your computer is being probed by someone; many of these probes are harmless or futile, but I do get about a dozen of them per day. On the Internet, one is never alone. Also, while we're on the subject: never, under any circumstances, install the official Kazaa client. The official client will install stealth backdoors all over your computer, which allow the makers of Kazaa to run arbitrary programs on your machine at any time they wish. A virus by any other name still smells as rotten.

Cleanup
Now that you have installed all this software, it's time for a bit of cleanup. For some reason, it has become really fashionable lately among software developers to force you to run their programs every time Windows starts up. Mozilla does it (although not by default), Microsoft Office does it, everyone else does it too. As the result, your computer will take ages to boot up, and it may also slow down to a crawl, since all these little startup programs are competing for the same processing power and memory.
Go to the Start Menu, click "Run", then type in "msconfig" and press Enter. A window with several tabs will pop up; click the "Startup" tab. This window lists all programs that are loaded every time when Windows boots up; you can disable individual programs by unchecking their checkboxes. The rule of thumb here is, "if you don't know what it does, disable it". If you want to be on the safe side, start disabling the programs one by one, rebooting after each time. This way you can quickly figure out if unchecking one of the startup programs results in some sort of an error. You can always re-enable the program by re-checking its box. In addition, there are several sites on the Web (such as Pacman's Portal and Answers That Work) that list all known startup programs along with a brief description of what they do -- so you can consult these sites before turning things off. Come to think of it, you might want to consult the comprehensive lists anyway, since many startup programs are actually viruses.
In addition to regular programs, Windows comes with a wide variety of services -- advanced, invisible programs which are supposed to perform arcane, low-level system tasks without which your computer won't run properly. Still, there are some services which can safely be disabled. Go to the Control Panel, and select "Administrative Tools | Services". You will see a list of services which are currently installed on your system, along with a description of each service. Click the "Starus" column to quickly see which services are currently running. You can disable any service by right-clicking it, selecting "Properties", and changing the startup type to "Manual" or "Disabled". Unlike the regular startup programs, services should not be disabled at a whim; still, you can safely turn off the following ones:
Restore Backed-up Data
This is pretty self-explanatory: restore your saved data from the backup CDs by unpacking it to some sensible location (or locations) on the Data partition. Not sure what else I can say about this.
Conclusion
At this point, you should have a working, useful WinXP
installation. What you might want to do now (other than to finally
start playing Counterstrike) is to use Partition Magic, Norton Ghost,
or some similar software to create a copy of your entire hard
drive. This way you can simply clone the entire hard drive onto a new
computer, instead of going through the whole install process
again. However, keep in mind that security holes in software crop up
quite often (and much more often in Microsoft's software than in
anyone else's), and thus you should always keep all of your computers
updated (through Windows Update) with the latest patches.

Short version: no.
Long version: maybe. Some of the tweaks (such as the "make all folders like this one") either apply recursively to many locations, or modify some local config files on the drive, for which there's no consistent API. Other tweaks do use the registry; however, I am too lazy to go and scour the registry for the changed keys. What I really want to do is to create a custom WinXP distro, but what are the chances of that happening ? :-)

1) make sure that your bios is set to boot from CD before the hard drive,
2) check the advanced installation features on your install CD. It may say something like "skip refomat and partition step" or something like that. Uncheck that box!
After that it should work ok.

Lots of these computers always set the bios to boot from the hard drive. Set it to boot from the CD. Also, go to the advanced features on the installation (you'll have to start a "regular" installation to get to it), and uncheck the "skip reformat and partition" (or something like that). Then everything will be groovy.
Lastly, if your packaged deal is a Sony anything, congratulate yourself on the purchase of an over-priced, semi-stylish paperweight, and buy something that actually works.

Anyway, I am curious about this "skip reformat and partition" box. Does this mean that the Windows CD that comes with Dell doesn't actually have the standard Windows installer -- but some sort of a Dell-h4x0red version ?

Ramakrishnan: you can probably find this information in the Device Manager. If that fails, I think your best bet is to simply open up your case, and look at the physical cards; their names and version numbers are usually printed on the cards themselves. You can then google for the card names, and download the official drivers from the card manufacturers (such as Creative, Turtle Beach, Nvidia, etc.). Also, make sure to visit the Windows Update regularly; they sometimes have driver updates as well.

Rama: I am not sure what you mean about the CD that will "automatically recognize any kind of device". To my knowledge, there's no CD like that, since this would involve creating a CD with all the possible drivers in existence saved on it -- and that would be a very large CD. Your best bet would be to open up the case like you said, look at the sound card, and then download drivers from the manufacturer. Most likely, you either have a built-in sound card that comes with your motherboard, or some Sound Blaster equivalent, but that's just my guess.

That's a nice guide, I learned quite a few things from it (f.ex., I honestly didn't know that fdisk still worked... cool... and I didn't know about the Norton Ghost gotchas). However, I disagree with you on a couple of points: You recommend disabling (or physically removing) all the extra hardware, such sound cards, printers, etc. However, I have found that installing these cards later on just creates more hassle. Firstly, you have to open your case and stick them in; sometimes, this will require you to rearrange some of your old cards... whose drivers you have already installed... bummer. Secondly, it's a lot easier to let Windows detect all the hardware in one pass (even if it does so incorrectly), and then update the drivers -- as opposed to mixing and matching the default drivers with the already updated ones. And of course, Microsoft's accursed product activation system will also cause you no end of trouble.You recommend unplugging your network cable before installing Windows, so you won't get hacked. This is a good idea in general, but I have discovered that Windows sometimes hangs during installation if it detects a network card with no cable (why ? who knows). A better solution might be to unplug your cable/DSL modem, but leave the ethernet cable plugged in. These are minor points though, your guide is great and I will link to it in my next revision. I might also write up an MBM guide, since it seems I am not the only one who uses it :-)

Yeah, you say that sort of joking.... BUT, it is actually worse than you think. I had a fresh installation of XP on today. First thing I did was start downloading the 34MB update pack. Before I even finished, my PC was announcing plans to turn off because the RPC system was unhappy.
Turns out I had been infected by the BLASTER worm within thirty minutes of first exposing a virgin XP install to the internet. (which is hard to avoid when you must install the 20+ different security patches)

Took a 16 GB drive, and installed XP Pro there, then reinstalled all my apps and data to a separate 80 GB drive. I like to clean my system yearly by Fdisk, Format & Reinstall anyway..hpefully this will allow me to simply manage the OS drive instead of the entire system. It seems to work fine, I simply have to change the default install directories by changing the drive from C: to D: Any further suggestions to this idea?

I don't need jukebox managers, video players, minibrowsers, 3d skinning, visualization, and whatever other goo-gaws they installed. Give me Winamp 2. Only, they don't distribute it anymore. Instead, get winamp2 at Download.com

Posted by: tim at 2003/12/28 22:30I replaced my sony laptop hard drive (40gb instead of 20), and did a fresh install of XP Pro (not the sony recover). Every thing works well except the audio on my dvd movies. Video is fine, audio CDs are fine, and the dvd audio plays, but stutters, as though it has a bum driver, or something is competing with the memory or processor, but I don't think video would be ok if that was the case. I was able to disable video, and audio sounded the same. Any thoughts or hints?

If that's the case, I'd just format the whole thing fresh, and install WinXP Pro. If he does need to recover the data on the computer, one thing he might do is pull out the hard drive, stick it into some other computer, read the data off of it, and then stick it back into the Dell and re-format it. Those aren't the quickest solutions, but they're probably the least troublesome.

Usually, stuttering video or audio is due to a bad driver (like you said), or due to some other program gobbling up massive amounts of CPU or memory -- f.ex., most spyware does this. But if you're sure that neither a bad driver nor spyware is the case... then... I don't think I can really help without seeing the actual laptop. Sorry...

For a novice like me it is very helpfull for someone to point out all the free "non-infested" ware that is out there. Question, I am trying to get everything togeather before installing XP, currently running ME, but I cant find how to download XP updates and save to a CD. Can I safely install XP and install the saftware I have downloaded including Zone alarme or Norton Internet security and then go online and download the XP updates? I may look like that meat you described but I sure don't want my computer to.
