GANTZ Spotlight

LogoEnd Logo Holy crap ! Talk about disturbing. The enigmatically-titled GANTZ starts off with some crowd dynamics, then rapidly progresses into a kind of a combo between Battle Royale and the Stanford Prison Experiment, only with aliens (if that's what they are), dimensional duplication, and hentai. And that's just the first three episodes !

If you're looking for an uplifting, funny, or simply entertaining anime, then you should just run away now, and never come back. Watching GANTZ is like getting a quick tour of the human psyche, which is not a good thing -- since most (if not all) of it is either downright evil, or frighteningly rational and efficient. The show doesn't even have a protagonist in the true sense: the main character is basically an egotistical cowardly loser. The supporting cast includes a purely rational agent with just a touch of murderous insanity, a "damsel in distress" who has virtually no free will of her own, and a semi-decent guy with a hero complex who might actually survive for one or two more episodes. Oh, and there's also a cute indestructible dog, and this matte black sphere that talks in the Japanese version of 1337. You would think it would be funny, but instead it just ends up being even more horrible.

I am honestly not sure if I even should watch this show past Episode 4; I am already starting to have flashbacks as it is. Who would have thought that studio Gonzo (makers of LastExile) could come up with something so depressing...

I am not too wild about the art of the show, though. It's not exactly bad, but it's pretty basic and low on detail. I know, I know, I have been spoiled by shows like Planetes and Wolf's Rain, but still, I expected more -- especially since Last Exile was so visually complex. I should also mention that Gonzo uses a bit more CGI in this show than usual; in most cases it looks ok, but sometimes it's a bit jarring. In addition, the character design is pretty bland, though I guess it could have been worse.

Another weak part of the show is the translation -- it's just not very good, especially compared to the original (fan-translated) manga (link courtesy of Roger, who inflicted GANTZ upon me to begin with). The anime is harder to follow than the manga -- partially because of the translation glitches, and partially because they cut a lot of material to fit the manga into the anime format.

All in all, this promises to be an interesting show (I skipped ahead a bit by reading the manga, though). It's still not as effective as Now and Then; in GANTZ, you've got these aliens and the stock characters and the hentai to take your mind off of how horrible humans can really be, whereas Now and Then is raw. Still, so far the two shows are pretty close. This definitely falls into Roger's "I don't need this" category... I'll post an update as more episodes come out.

I liked the CG just fine.

How can you do the 3D printer/materialization process in the manga? You need anime for that.

btw, on the show's website, there's a screenshot that showed viscera during the scanning process (you should link to it here, it's cool sequence, kinda like Visible Human).
But in the actual broadcast anime, you only see a flash of light. I guess they don't want to upset even more people than they already have.

I dunno, I was turned off by the concept. -_-"
Although I did read several volumes of the Manga, I still thinks it's horrible.

I'm still waiting for my friend to lend me his d/l episode, and may be I can judge better w/o the bias.

As for Gonzo coming up with this kind of stuff, I'll bet they'll go after any plot that has 3d as main use, since Their studio specializes in 3D stuff.(So they could do it in-house)

Well, actually the manga handled the 3d rematerialization process pretty well (by only showing the keyframes), and it showed the hideous internal organs, too. Aargh now I am having flashbacks again...

I don't know why you liked Now and Then so much. It was a childishly simple depiction, with no nuance whatsoever. And the main character was a "pacifist," with an anger control problem.

Mind, there was even more I hated about it, but I haven't seen it in six months, and I don't want to rewatch it to come up more details.

There best part about it was the song at the end of each episode, which I actually quite liked.

Ah... you haven't watched it to the end, have you ? Heh heh heh. Don't mind me, I'm just mocking your short-sightedness.

Posted by: Bugmaster at 2004/05/13 02:45

What short-sightedness, I did watch it to the end. In another display of human psychology, I kept watching, hating every minute hoping that at the end something would justify all the wasted hours.

But of course, it never did. From memory:

Hamdo: OOOOO!!!! I'm CRAZY!!!!!! AHHHHH!!!!

Lala: ................ (Wow, isn't the silence mystifying.)

Shu: I don't think we should fight, BUT I'LL KILL YOU FUCKERS!!!!!!!

Posted by: owen at 2004/05/13 03:07

Hm. I guess you're not short-sighted, just myopic. I liked the show a lot specifically because of the whole pacifism/war/humanity theme. On the one hand we have Hamdo, the ultimate warrior basiacally (ok, he's insane, but you have to admit that his strategies are effective). On the other hand you have Shu, who abhors violence of any kind. But now... what can he do ? He wants to stop Hamdo, but talking to him is obviously useless, so it's possible only through extreme violence... Catch 22. Pacifism doesn't work, violence is impossible to justify from a purely ethical point of view (not that the oasis dwellers didn't try it, mind you). In the end, we don't have an answer: Shu just breaks, and he knows it as well as we do.

Hm, maybe that's why you didn't like the show ? Because it didn't give you all the andswers ?

Answers? It didn't even present questions.

Posted by: owen at 2004/05/13 05:48

As I said above, I was able to discern many more themes in the anime than, well, zero. The main question is, "is violence ever morally justified ?". The follow-ups, of course, are "what use is pacifism if it doesn't work ?", "does the end justify the means ?", "is hope based on false information better than no hope at all ?", etc.

The reason I liked NTHT is that it doesn't lay out these themes in some sort of structured, dry, philosophical form -- instead, it makes you actually experience them (in a close and personal way). And, unlike Human Scramble or something, NTHT doesn't hit you upside the head with a moralizing baseball bat -- it presents the questions and lets you agonize over the answers (which is a much more effective method, come to think of it).

Anyway, getting back on topic of GANTZ.
I just read all the manga I could get my hands on.

I don't know. I hope it's more than just monster of the week. Even though so far the monsters are pretty interesting. And by interesting, I mean unexpected. But I think we the readers just like the group in GANTZ start to be lulled into certain sense of stability. You know, the kind of security that only a skintight powersuit can bring and the sense of normalcy you get when you start to look forward to the little get-togethers in the nondescript room to perform weekly ritual of stat-upping ultraviolence.

Wow, GANTZ is a serious mind-f**k... I'm reading all the manga now, which is a lot more graphic than the anime is. Does anyone know where I can download more GANTZ manga chapters? They're up to volume 6 on omanga.net, but I heard there were RAWs around for up to volume 12.

Just my two cents worth... I think Gantz is an excellent series. I agree some of the sweeping in and out camera can be a little odd sometimes, but the problems of bad translation and jumpy scene changes will probably be fixed with the commercial release, with professional translators and the censored content returned.

For those who don't know, Gantz was originally 13 eps, but they edited so much of the gore out it was brought down to 11. (So I hear) The DVDs should fix that, and I can't wait.

Not that I have a thing about gore... O:)
