Adventures With Sony
The more I play with the Sony camera, the more mixed my impressions of it become.
Lessons Learned:
- Don't use the White Balance button. It's a trick. They just want you to screw up your colors.
- The noise in low-light conditions is comparable to Kodak. I.e., it sucks. Just as with Kodak, though, setting the ISO to 100 fixes the problem somewhat.
- The default video settings are useless. They record nothing but noise. The "HQX" video mode is a bit better, but it still only records 320x240 video... Basically, the movie mode of the camera is just a gimmick.
- The NightFraming mode, on the other hand, is actually useful. Good job, Sony.
- I am still having major problems with macro focusing when I zoom in even a little bit. I don't get it... what do they want from me ? Kodak can focus at any zoom with no problems. Well, I should say, no more problems than usual.

Why doesn't white balance work?
Is it to set custom white balance?
No, it's just broken. They have several white balance presets, such as "sunlight" or "incandescent", and all of them suck. Apparently it's too difficult to use the jog wheel for white balance, like it's used for everything else...
Ok. I guess this is the one area that Canon G3 is better. With G3, you can point the camera at something and tell it "this should be rendered completely white" and G3 will tweak the curves to get that part of the picture to be white.
