Help A Guy Out

Well, I've come into some pretty tight financial situations. Life being the way it is, I'm trying to make the best of it. I'm hoping to, as the Beatles put it, "get by with a little help from my friends." So, if you'll notice, I put a little paypal donation thing on the side of the blog. Please donate. I feel bad putting this up, because I don't want anybody to think I want a bail out. I'm surviving, honest. I just want to distance myself from the panic threshold, is all. Rest assured, I'm not going to abuse your generosity by purchasing something like games or a new monitor or something. This money goes strictly to bills.

Sure, certain websites can offer things in exchange for donation. I'm afraid that my talents are not that good. I cannot produce something "for the masses" that everybody would want to donate for.

This is not to say that I can't do anything. So, if you feel generous, then donate out of the goodness of your heart. But if you want something for your money, let me know. I'm sure we can come to an arrangement. I can draw ok, I've made webpages before, and I'm sure that there's something you want that I can provide. I just don't know what it is, yet. Any and all is always appreciated. This will be linked to from the donation sidebar for reference. Thanks.

Bugmaster:

I am actually curious how these types of systems work. Do you need to report the money received through donations to ye olde IRS ? If so, what does it count as for tax purposes ?

Jason:

Well, it depends. Donations are considered gifts. You only have to declare gifts if they exceed a certain amount. I probably wouldn't have to, while if Penny Arcade set their's up, they would be declaring the donations. Though it's typically something you should ask your friendly neighborhood accountant about. That's my knowledge of it.

From what I know, you only have to pay taxes on gifts after you reach an aggregate of $10,000. So Jason, if you make it that point, good job.

I only know this because I had a debate case on shifting tips from income to "donations." That way, waiters, etc. would not have to pay taxes on their first $10,000 in tips.

Rather than helping you with money, I have helped by installing MT-Blacklist v1.62; the spammers should now have a harder time jacking up their PageRank through your blog. When a spam comment is posted, you should see an entry in the activity log. Let me know how that goes.
