Courage or Insanity?

"Courage is not the absence of fear, but the strength to do what is right in the face of it." - J. Johnson.

"Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage" - From my metal bookmark.

But what is courage exactly? Does it include losing friends and family because you're brave enough to admit to being who and what you are? What about approaching people romantically only to be rejected again and again? Or refusing to be walked all over at work and ending up with the worst shifts and pay? What about holding up your ideals and maintaining your integrity though you miss opportunities?

You know there's another quote for things like this.

"There's a fine line between courage and insanity." - Some book I can't remember.

So, am I being courageous or insane? I really can't tell the difference anymore.

A little bit from column (a), a little bit from column (b).

Great. So I'm partly a lunatic. Strike that. Mostly a lunatic.

Bug is pretty close. It's a matter of perspective. Certainly some things that are courageous and/or brave are quite clearly insane to the outside viewer.

But if we're going to address the questions you've presented (which all amount to lifestyle choice - "who do you want to become?"), then it's entirely your perspective. You've chosen your moral code and how/who you want to be. Courage is the adherence to those morals/goals/choices.

I've certainly lost friends because of choices I've made that adhere to my standards. Getting married and having a kid have certainly altered the course of my life, and (for example) there are friends that I did have that I've lost because they didn't want to be involved with that (hopefully you guys over in Simi still like me).

There are some people that respect me for my spiritual choices, and others that distance themselves from me when they find out that I'm not "mainstream bible-belt christian" like they are.

Your work situation is up for interpretation. There is no evidence to support the scenario that being walked over would eventually net you better pay/hours/positions. You might get stuck in the position you're already in because The Powers That Be decide "oh, let's give it to Tony. He'll do anything."

Courage is the adherence to what you believe is right, and nothing else. Other people will see you as courageous if your sense of right aligns with theirs (or they at least understand yours). Otherwise, you are just stupid/insane as far as they are concerned.

It really just amounts to "screw them." But in a nicer way.

Don't worry Jason. I don't think your religion is more wrong than any of the other ones. I think they're all fundamentally wrong, mainstream or not. Yes, Raelians, I'm looking at you.
